Program’s Name: The National Parent
Read Campaign
How
and why campaign was started:
During the first year of In My Shoes, parents
would ask about a good reference book that would
help them with getting involved in their child’s
education. When our founder, Phyllis
Austin, went to the bookstore to search for one
she could recommend, she found none based on
practicality. As Ms. Austin stated, “Many
books read like dissertations and offer parents
no or very little strategies.” As many
educators know, many parents of non-successful
students have difficulties with implementing
effective academic, disciplinary and conflict
resolution strategies.
Program Objectives:
Overall Objective:
To teach parents how to be positively involved
in their child’s life and education
Supporting Objective:
To help parents develop strategies,
disseminate guidance and propagate unconditional
love
